Kseniya Simonov, winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent, performs a beautiful piece of sand art depicting the invasion of Ukraine by German forces during World War II. The piece is moving and amazingly well performed. I’ve never really experienced art in the way Simonov has presented it.
What really irks me, however, is the knowledge that the general audience of a show like America’s Got Talent would probably not appreciate such a incredible display of true talent and artistry. The likelihood of Simonov even getting on to the televised portion of the show is pretty minimal. Television to a huge extent is escapism, it’s true. But why does it seem that Americans want to escape into mindlessness? From where I’m standing, it seems like a lot of Americans live their whole lives escaping into the thoughtless void.
