Detroit’s Creative controversy
Rome based neon sign artist Martin Creed comments on the city and MoCAD (Museum of Conteporary Art Detroit) challenges Detroiters to the debate.
Carlie Dennis MoCAD PR explains “Nothing will be Alright” facade can be interpreted in a number of ways. In life, it’s expected to experience joys, pains, ups and downs, so experiences will never be exactly all right or all good. MOCAD’s sentiments add the interpretation that people don’t need that much to survive. Actually, we can survive on very little. Therefore, even if we have what appears to be “nothing” we will still be “alright.”
“With the mayor being in jail and the failure of the auto industry we don’t have a lot left in Detroit, but we’ll be alright,” Carlie says.

I guess I like this explanation of the new sign, but I still think the former was a more encouraging message that the Average Joe on the street could interpret. But poohaps it’s the lack of critical thinking by the Average Joe that has put Detroit in some of the positions the city is in nowadays. Think more.
