I recently bought an iPhone and have a growing list of things I dislike about the device.
- Ringtones: I own a Zune. I do not purchase my music on iTunes. I also refuse to purchase music with DRM on it. I should not have to buy the same song multiple times just to have a ringtone of it. I figured out a way to work around this, but it’s tedious.
- SMS Timestamps: Why aren’t they there? I don’t want my timestamps to be in 15 minute blocks. What’s the purpose of having a timestamp if it only gives me a vague idea of when a message was sent? At least let me toggle my timestamp settings…LIKE EVERY OTHER PHONE. While you’re at it, let me change the colors of the damn talk bubbles.
- Auto-Dim: There is no way to set my auto-dim to 5 seconds or anything less than the minute it takes for the auto-lock to kick in. What the hell? The iPhone is already a beast in battery usage, why not let me dim my backlight after 5 seconds to save just a wee bit more of my battery?
- Battery Guage: When it comes to smartphones, I want a much smarter battery guage. I’d like to know exactly how much battery I have left without having to download a special app for it. I also want more fine-tune control over my power usage (see complaint 3).
- Text Message Sounds: Pretty simple, I’d like to have a custom sound for my text messages (and email, to be honest). I’d like to know it’s my phone giving me an alert and not the 20 iPhones surrounding me.
I’ve only had the phone for about a week, so I’m sure I’ll find more aspects of the device that I dislike, but these are all that come to mind right now. There are plenty of things the iPhone does right but those are fairly self-evident.
